Representatives from seven scenic spots in canal cities such as West Lake in Hangzhou and Mount Tai in Tai'an met in Yangzhou on Oct 11, launching a cooperation drive to better promote the Grand Canal.

The program is led by the World Historic and Cultural Canal Cities Cooperation Organization (WCCO), a non-profit international organization formed by a number of canal cities and economic or cultural institutions worldwide founded in 2009.

Zhu Minyang, chairman of WCCO, said scenic spots in cities alongside the Grand Canal were important carriers of the canal's history and culture.

This program will contribute to the further protection and development of its tourism resources and enhance communication among canal cities.

It is also expected to focus on promoting canal culture and elevating the influence of the Grand Canal.

"We hope the program can be a platform for deep communication and mutual development," said Zhang Futang, secretary of the Party Working Committee of the Slender West Lake scenic area.

Zhang added that the program is vital to the development of regional tourism and economic development.
