Wuxi welcomes its 3rd higher education institution

The Binjiang College of Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (NUIST) opened in Wuxi's Xishan district on Sept 17, Wuxi Daily reported.

The college, covering an area of 1101 mu (73.4 hectare), became the third higher education institution in Wuxi city following Jiangnan University and Taihu University.

By cultivating highly qualified technicians the college will accommodate the development demand of the municipal economy by offering full-time undergraduate education and various training programs.

A total of 2,545 students started their school life in Binjiang College in Sept, including undergraduates, postgraduates, doctoral students and 127 overseas students from 18 countries and regions.

Binjiang College has set up 11 institutes, including an Institute of Internet of Things and schools of rail transit, electronic information engineering, automation and business. The Institute of Internet of Things Engineering and the School of Rail Transit were built based on features of Wuxi's development, the most advanced in the internet of things industry in China.

Wuxi's acting mayor Huang Qin said that the new college will help to provide a broader education and produce better qualified workers in the future.

NUIST, founded in 1960, was previously the Nanjing Institute of Meteorology, and is one of China's key higher education institutions. Its discipline of Atmospheric Science ranked first in the country in 2012, according to a study by the Ministry of Education.
