Taiwan resident Mr Dai received his mainland residence permit at Henan police station of Hechi municipal public security bureau on Sept 1, becoming the first permit recipient at the Jinchengjiang office.

Accompanied by his grandparents from Liuzhou, Dai submitted the required application materials and received the permit the same day.

According to regulations released by the State Council Information Office on Aug 16, residents of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan who have lived on the Chinese mainland for longer than six months may apply for a new mainland residence permit as of Sept 1.

A total of 1,421 offices have begun accepting applications for the new permit in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. Their addresses can be acquired through the website and the WeChat official account of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Public Security Department.

Applicants with stable jobs and housing who have lived on the mainland for more than half a year can bring their valid mainland travel permits and related materials to local police offices. They will receive the permit in about 15 working days from the day of acceptance.

Holders of a mainland residence permit have almost the same rights as existing mainland residents in medical care, employment, education, vehicle license application, travel booking and hotel accommodation.

Applicants under the age of 16 may apply for the permit via their parents or legal guardians.

The expiry period of the permit is five years. It is free of charge for the first application, and 20 yuan ($2.93) is charged for any replacement.
