A choir from the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou won the grand prix of the 12th Cantemus International Choir Competition held on Aug 19 in Hungary.

The Lark choir of Guangzhou Children's Palace consists of 43 youths from Guangzhou, mainly junior high school students. The choir was invited by the Organizing Committee of the 12th Cantemus International Choir Competition a year ago and was the only children's choir from China to be invited to participate.

Chen Ling, the choir conductor, also pocketed the only conductor award during the event.

During the competition, each choir had 12 minutes to showcase their performance. The Guangzhou choir chose to perform three works, two of which were Hungarian songs. The children's accurate interpretation of the two songs amazed the Hungarian audiences.

The Guanzhou children made great efforts to let the native speakers recognize the songs. Ever since they received the invitation to the event, the members rehearsed at Guangzhou Children's Palace every weekend and received trainings during the winter and summer vacations. They first followed the audio of the original Hungarian songs and then sang, and then sent their recordings to Hungary to be corrected by local experts.
