China's first underwater robot capable of remote navigation detection in underwater tunnels was recently released by CSG Power Generation Co, a subsidiary of China Southern Power Grid Co Ltd, and is expected to help reduce the cost of security checks and guarantee normal operation of power networks.

The robot, which can function at 1,000 meters below the surface, will soon be used in routine inspection of underwater facilities of pumped-storage hydroelectricity and ordinary hydropower stations.

It makes use of many advanced technologies such as remote control, autonomous return voyaging and autonomous escape from danger. Some of the technologies are the first of their kind in China.

Research and development of the robot began in September 2014 and was completed in June 2018. The process included technical design, sample production, debugging and lake trials. Testing was carried out at more than three power plants of CSG Power Generation Co to examine the reliability and practicability of the many functions.
