The Guangzhou Symphony Youth Orchestra began its European tour this year with a French debut at Théatre Antique in Lyon, France on July 30.

During the show, a variety of music was played to mark the end of Les Nuits de Fourvière, a renowned international art festival that has been regularly held at the ancient theater.

The performance by the Guangzhou orchestra also serves to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Guangzhou and Lyon.

Dominique Delorme, president of the art festival, remarked that the performance was excellent and put a perfect end to this year's art festival.

This is not the first time that the orchestra has toured overseas. It will head to the Czech Republic on Aug 1 and Italy on Aug 4.

According to Chen Qing, head of the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, the tour offers members an opportunity to appreciate different cultures and display the spirit and cultural self-confidence of Chinese youth.

The young musicians, 90 percent being students from Guangzhou's middle and primary schools, can play symphonies at a professional level. They owe their success to the orchestra's way of operating.

As the first of its kind in China to be established and managed by a professional orchestra, the Guangzhou Symphony Youth Orchestra boasts the most complete and advanced rehearsal facilities in the country and is staffed with highly talented professionals.

Chen also added that the orchestra has helped popularize youth music education.
