A group of diabolo enthusiasts from Guyun Community in Yangzhou have been invited to perform in Russia in August, in celebration of the 69th anniversary of the establishment of a diplomatic relationship between China and Russia.

Kongzhu, also known as diabolo, is a traditional Chinese game and was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2006.

Founded in 2016, the group now has 15 members and all of them are either middle-aged or elderly.

"I played diabolo when I was a child. I really miss the buzzing sound, but I didn't get the chance to play it again until I retired," said Xu Baoyuan, 69, leader of the group.

Through watching teaching videos and learning from other diabolo players, Xu soon found his talent.

At the end of 2015, Xu was invited by the community to form a diabolo group.

"Playing diabolo is very beneficial. It's not only a body exercise, but also a relaxation for the spirits. I am very glad to be able to promote diabolo culture in the community," said Xu.

In order to connect with diabolo groups in other cities, Xu always went to local squares to find them on his travels.

"I have been to many cities including Nanjing, Hangzhou and Shanghai, and I have found a lot of like-minded friends," said Xu.

Through Xu's efforts, the Guyun diabolo group soon got a nationwide reputation. The group has been invited to perform in other cities and has won a lot of prizes in the past two years.

Zhou Yangmei, deputy secretary of Guyun Community, said that the community has been supporting the diabolo group through buying costumes, designing the logo and providing exercise areas since it was founded in 2016.

Now, the diabolo group rehearses every week and the group has figured out several new movements through trial and error.

Zou Qingwen, director of the community, said that playing diabolo can bring a healthier lifestyle to residents, especially in keeping children away from smart phones.
