Zhanjiang has once again been included on the list of the top 100 Chinese cities released by the Warton Economic Institute in Shanghai on July 20.

The rankings were based on economic and non-economic (soft economy) indicators from the National Bureau of Statistics.

The economic indicators refer to GDP and household savings, which account for 61.8 percent of a city’s total score. The non-economic indexes consist of four parts, including science and education, culture, health and natural environment, which make up 38.2 percent.

The cities on the list are the major drivers of China's sustainable economic development, with their combined GDP accounting for 75.22 percent of the country’s total, according to Shen Hanyao, president of the Warton Economic Institute.

Cities dominated by traditional industries have generally declined in the rankings, while those fostering strategic emerging industries all rose.

In terms of regional distribution, 42 of the 100 cities are located in either the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta or the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the three largest economic circles in the country.
