Nantong Shen Shou Art Museum was established on the former site of the Nantong Institute of Needlework and Embroidery Training founded by Zhang Jian in 1914 in memory of Shen Shou (1874-1921), a famous modern embroidery master. It collects the masterpieces of "emulational embroidery", as the embroidery by Shen Shou and her students is sometimes called, which was listed as an intangible cultural heritage of China in 2008. Shen embroidery such as Obama's Family, President Putin's Portrait and Belgian King Philip's Family made a stir as gifts to those dignitaries on the occasion of visits by Chinese leaders to the White House, the Kremlin and the Belgian Maison du Roi.
