Zhanjiang launched an anti-drug campaign at Lingnan Normal University (LNU) on June 24, two days ahead of the 31st International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

More than 5,000 officials, students and representatives from all walks of life attended the event.

Zhanjiang Party secretary Zheng Renhao delivered a keynote speech enumerating the achievements the city has made in improving its anti-drug mechanisms, promoting preventative education and expanding rehabilitation facilities into communities.

According to Huang Yongwu, director of the Zhanjiang Public Security Bureau, the reason for the campaign at LNU is to increase awareness among students of the harm of drug abuse and help them steer clear of drugs.

Huang also called on every citizen to help shoulder the responsibility of fighting against drug abuse and take action to build a drug-free society.

Led by Lao Lishi, winner of women's synchronized 10-meter platform diving at the 2004 Olympics and the city's anti-drug ambassador, all the attendees took an oath to stay away from drugs and build a harmonious society.

In addition, popular science billboards and anti-drug exhibition booths were set up at the LUN campus to educate locals on how to identify drugs and drug-making tools.
