Guangzhou shines brighter in global biomedical industry

With the biomedical cluster gradually taking shape in Guangzhou Development District, the city of Guangzhou is displaying growing influence in the world's biomedical industry. The district will take Guangzhou Science City, Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City, and International Bio Island as key platforms to boost the industry, striving to build a 100-billion-yuan ($15.7 billion) biomedicine industry cluster during the 13th Five Year Plan (2016-2020).

On May 18, the southern Chinese metropolis hosted the 2018 BiG Annual Conference, where government officials, experts, scholars and big shots from the capital investment and clinical application fields convened and carried out in-depth talks on the trend of cutting-edge biomedicine technologies and innovation transformation system.

Over 110 companies from Beijing, the Pearl River Delta and the Yangtze River Delta regions attended the conference. About 70 percent of the firms are biopharmaceutical enterprises, including Wuxi Apptech, Boehringer-Ingelheim, Zai Lab, Johnson & Johnson and Thermo Fisher. During the conference, the founders and R & D officials of the companies shared the strategic positioning of their companies and the development of core technologies.

Founded in 2014, the Biologics Innovation Group (BiG) aims to draw in the backbone power in macromolecular drugs and biological medicine technology research, create a platform to talk about the development of biological medicine research and related technologies and promote communication between biomedicine research institutes, investors and media. The event has become the indicator of the latest trend in biomedicine development and by hosting the event, Guangzhou Development District has fully proved itself as a place with best development environment for biomedicine industry.

According to Wang Xiaodong, one of the founders of BiG and head of the National Institute of Biological Sciences in Beijing, the Guangzhou Development District has bright prospect for biomedicine development, and it serves as a forefront in the Belt and Road Initiative and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The district boasts talents who are bold to innovate and make things happen and is the cradle for innovation and entrepreneurship.
