Chinese engineering firm completes construction of Brunei's largest cross-sea bridge

China Harbor Engineering Company Limited (CHEC) has completed the construction of Pulau Muara Besar Bridge, the first cross-sea bridge in Brunei on May 18.

The contract was awarded to CHEC, a subsidiary of China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC) through an open tender process.

Constructed by CCCC Second Harbor Engineering Company, the 5,915-meter-long facility is a dual-carriageway bridge with a speed of 100 kilometers per hour, connecting Pulau Muara Besar, an island on Brunei Bay, with the mainland of Brunei via Serasa in Brunei-Muara District.

The development of Pulau Muara Besar project involved a construction of a 2,680-meter-long, 23.6-meter-wide bridge, a 2,925-meter-long road on the east and a 310-meter-long road on the west of the bridge.

The staff of the project braved a year of extreme Brunei heat and conquered a group of technical difficulties with their strengths in technology, management and teamwork.

The completion is expected to attract more foreign direct investments particularly in the area of petrochemical and related downstream oil and gas industries and help transform Pulau Muara Besar into a world-class industrial park.
