A non-stop air route to Lhasa was opened with the take-off of airbus A319 from Wuhan Tianhe International Airport on May 18. This is the first and only non-stop route to Tibet from Wuhan, China's Hubei province.

The opening of the route made it a "line of economic security" and a "line of social progress".

With the peak season of Tibetan tourism arriving, the route will provide more convenience for residents in the Tibet autonomous region and also for Wuhan tourists travelling to Tibet. It will further enhance the accessibility between cities, and promote economic development and urban exchanges between the two places.

After the opening of the route, the total number of domestic and foreign destinations of Wuhan Tianhe Airport has increased to 129, of which the domestic destinations increased to 80, and international destinations increased to 49. The number of domestic and international routes has increased to 179, including 124 domestic routes and 55 international routes.
