The main construction of a new airport will be completed by 2018 and the airport will start operations in September 2019, according to Beijing Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-rural Development on May 18.

With its completion, Beijing will have an additional terminal area of 700,000 square meters, 4 runways and 268 parking bays, which will release pressure for a large number of international flight schedules.

Construction of the new airport is progressing as scheduled. The terminal building is undergoing internal fine decoration and the installation of electromechanical equipment, the information center construction is progressing steadily, and the construction of various information systems is underway, Beijing Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-rural Development said.

The new airport adopts an innovative design in baggage system that shortens the average distance of baggage transport, saving time for the passengers.

The as-yet unnamed airport, located 46 kilometers south of downtown Beijing, is designed to take pressure off the overcrowded Beijing Capital International Airport in the northeastern suburbs, according to chinadaily.com.cn.

It will sit on the junction of Beijing's Daxing district and Langfang, a city in Hebei province. It's 67 km from Beijing Capital International Airport and 85 km from Tianjin Binhai International Airport.
