Tianjin Binhai New Area, located in the eastern coastal area of Tianjin, the intersectional area of the Bohai Sea economic zone and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei metropolitan area, is the eastern starting point of the Eurasian Continental Bridge.
The area covers 2,270 square meters, and has a 153 km coastline and a 3,000 square meter maritime zone.
In September 1995, initial overall planning of Binhai New Area proposed a development model of a port-centric international free trade zone.
In October 2005, Tianjin Binhai New Area became part of the National Development Strategy.
In January 2001, the construction of Binhai New Area was listed as one of the “20th Century Events of Tianjin”.
On April 26, 2006, the State Council approved promotion of the development of Binhai New Area.
In May 2006, it was selected as a pilot zone for overall reform, and set development goals and functional orientations.
In July 2006, the State Council stressed the urban orientation of Tianjin – it was to become an international port city, the economic center of North China and an ecocity with a prosperous economy, civilized society, perfect facilities and an elegant environment.
On November 9, 2009, Binhai New Area launched reform of its administration system to help it become an economic hub for local development similar to the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and the Pudong New District of Shanghai. The State Council approved establishment of the Binhai New Area as a merger of the administrative regions of Tanggu district, Hangu district and Dagang district.

Binhai New Area will sharpen its competitiveness of three preponderant industries -- mobile communication, new component, digital audio-visual system, promote the four potential industries -- high performance computer servers, integrated circuits, embedded electronics and software and foster six strategic emerging industries -- Internet of things, cloud computing, information security, artificial intelligence, optoelectronics and OLED display devices.
Petroleum and chemical industry
Binhai New Area will increase its exploration and reserves of oil and gas and aims to exploit 40 million tons of oil with reserve capacity of 20 million tons on a yearly basis. The annual crude oil refining capacity is expected to reach 350 tons.
Equipment manufacturing:
Binhai New Area will develop large petroleum and petrochemical equipment, rail transportation equipment, equipment for energy saving and environmental protection and comprehensive utilization of resources, shipbuilding and marine engineering equipment, large engineering machinery, complete sets of wind power equipment, hydropower equipment, nuclear power equipment, ultra-high voltage transmission and port machinery.
New energy
Binhai New Area will focus on the manufacturing of wind power, environmental friendly battery, solar photovoltaic and LED products. In the wind power field, the research and development of 2.5MW or above onshore wind turbines, 3.5 MW or above offshore wind turbine, blade, control system generator, converter, and gearbox will be prioritized.
New materials
Binhai will actively develop the technology of special functional materials and green chemical materials, such as special plastics and special polymer materials.

Binhai New Area deepens the reform of the investment and financing system, carries out pilot projects of integrated management, improves financial services, improves its insurance reform, integrates and establishes new financial institutions, improves the system of financial institutions, deepens rural financial reform.
Aviation and Aerospace
Binhai New Area gives full play to the leading role of Airbus A320 assembly line in promoting the development of aircraft engines, avionics systems and airborne, airport and air traffic control equipment and other key components to improve the level of support and parts localization rate.
