With all roadbeds now successfully laid down, the Donghai Island-Leizhou Highway is one step closer to its official opening by the end of 2019. When completed, the highway will cut the current 80-minute drive between Donghai Island and Leizhou Peninsula to less than half an hour.

Costing 5.2 billion yuan ($816.7 million), the 47.03-kilometer highway will start from Min'an town on Donghai Island and pass through Leizhou Peninsula via Shentang town before terminating at the Fenyong New and High-Tech Development Zone. Most of the highway will feature a dual four-lane design, with a speed limit of 100 kilometers per hour.

Upon completion, the highway will bring the Island and Leizhou closer than ever before and connect them with major artery roads in the city. This will greatly increase ease of transportation of the iron and petrochemicals industries on the island, while also boosting regional economic development.
