Xiamen plans to build a special fishing port-based economic zone as a response to the recently released action plan by China's National Development and Reform Commission and Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

The National Fishing Port Construction Plan (2018-2025) states that Xiamen will establish a new fishery base exclusive to Taiwan.

Covering 546,100 square meters, the fishery base will act as a platform where Taiwan fishermen and businessmen can trade with their Chinese mainland counterparts in hope of expanding the market of Taiwan marine products' market in Chinese mainland.

The fishery base together with the existing Fujian-Taiwan Central Harbor will be developed into a special fishing port-based economic zone featuring coastal tourism and trading with Taiwan.

The fishing port-based economic zone is expected to produce 52,100 tons of marine products in a year and house 1,845 boats and six fishing ports, according to the action plan.

The plan calls for building 64 central harbors, 85 first-class ports, and 93 fishing port-based economic zones nationwide to further promote the sustainable growth of the fishing industry and accelerate the development of fishing harbors.
