The city of Shenzhen saw a significant decline in traffic congestion indices (TCI) during the Labor Day holiday due to the city's new transportation reservation system that took effect April 29.

The new system was launched in Dapeng Peninsula, which lies in the east of Longgang district of Shenzhen and to the northeast of Hong Kong. It is often crammed with visitors during holidays.

According to the city's transportation department, from April 29 to May 1, all vehicles with a registration address outside Dapeng Peninsula (apart from vehicles with more than 10 seats, taxis, lorries, police cars, ambulances, fire trucks and cars heading for Huizhou) need to make a reservation prior to travelling on any roads within the peninsula. Drivers who violate the regulation will face a 300-yuan ($47.2) fine and have three points taken out of their 12-point driver's license.

On April 30, Dapeng Peninsula hosted 19,551 vehicles, with 8,538 cars arriving in the morning, 8, 7865 arriving in the afternoon and 2148 in the evening.

According to the statistics launched by Shenzhen's traffic police authority, Baidu Map and Amap, the TCI in Shenzhen declined to 1.4, down 13 percent over April 29, the first day of the Labor Day holiday. The average speed across the city's road network reached 34.3 kilometers per hour, 6.95 percent faster than that of the previous day.
