Beijing Normal University (BNU) has a history of more than 100 years. It developed out of the Faculty of Education at Metropolitan University, established in 1902, and is the first university in Chinese history whose mission is to train excellent teachers and specialists. It was renamed Beijing Normal University in 1923.
BNU now teaches all disciplines issued by the State Council Committee, with the exception of agriculture, medicine and military affairs, becoming a vital education and research base for multi-disciplinary and advanced studies.
Beijing Normal University Zhuhai (BNUZ) was jointly established by BNU and the Zhuhai municipal government with the approval of the Ministry of Education. It provides full-time study for students, focusing on undergraduate education, and is located in Zhuhai, a coastal city in Guangdong province. Covering over 5,000 mu (333.3 hectares), it provides modern, high quality, newly constructed teaching and living facilities, including libraries, teaching buildings, an international exchange center, dormitories, staff apartments, and cafeterias, among other things. BNUZ is blessed with a beautiful, tranquil environment and is an ideal place for students to pursue their studies.
BNUZ has 14 schools - literature, management, information technology, logistics, real estate, franchise, laws & administration, design, arts and communications, foreign language, engineering technology, applied mathematics, sports & leisure, and a department of international business. Sixty-one undergraduate majors lead to academic achievements in a wide range of disciplines. BNUZ takes the development of applied subjects, such as economics and management, as its foundation as it continuously strives to improve its educational curriculum.
A highly-qualified faculty ensure a strong standard of teaching and a high degree of intellectual rigor. Among the teaching staff, 82 percent have a master's degree and 25 percent have a doctorate. Foreign teachers account for 10 percent.
Zhuhai was one of the first special economic zones to be established during China's reform and opening up in the 1980s. According to a survey, it is one of the happiest cities in China and the national leader in terms of environmental protection and rapid development. The city enjoys a convenient transportation network owing to its location at the intersection of the Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway, West Coast Expressway and Guangzhou-Zhuhai Light Rail. It is a half-hour drive from Guangzhou University City, 40 minutes from Guangzhou City Proper and one hour from Shenzhen.
Zhuhai is connected to Macao by road, and once the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is completed, it will be a mere 30-minute drive from Hong Kong. Five nearby airports in Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Macao and Zhuhai are all within an hour drive from the university. The buildings, living facilities and overall environment are among the best in China.
