Activities to popularize Worldwide Corrosion Day were held in Shenyang, Northeast China’s Liaoning province, on April 25.

Initiated by the World Corrosion Organization, each year’s April 24 marks the Worldwide Corrosion Day.

More than 2,000 people participated in the activities, including science reports, exhibitions, and experiments, showing people the bad influences of corrosion and raising their awareness to prevent and control corrosion.

Han Enhou, president of the World Corrosion Organization, made a report, pointing out that corrosion not only pollutes the environment but also threatens people’s health, such as rusty iron pans and faucets in the kitchen.

However, if used properly, corrosion can also benefit people, such as degradable fixation devices in the bones, which disappear due to corrosion, said Han.

People’s awareness of preventing and controlling corrosion still needs to be improved, added Han.

Students from Liaoning Province Shiyan High School also participated in a one-day science experience camp. They conducted experiments with young scientists to learn more about corrosion.

During the activities, exhibitions on corrosion application, corrosion prevention, and knowledge about nuclear power will also be available.
