Inner Mongolia Agricultural University is a key university in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region. Located in Hohhot, a famous historical and cultural city in China, the school is renowned as the "national green model institution" and the "garden type institution of higher education" in Northwest China.

It is also one of China's first batch of 32 bases for college students' cultural quality education. In 2001, the school became the key supported college of the "one province and one school" project under the country's Go-West Campaign. In 2012, it became a cooperatively backed university, supported by both the government of the autonomous region and State Forestry Bureau. In 2013, it entered the ranks of the national Higher Education Revitalization Plan in West and Central China.

As the earliest university established in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, the school was formed by the merger of the former Inner Mongolia Agricultural and Animal Husbandry College and the Inner Mongolia Forestry College in 1999.

The school focuses on agricultural disciplines and features pasture animal husbandry. It is a multi-disciplinary university with eight disciplines including agriculture, industry, science, management, literature, law and art. It now has 22 institutes on animal science. Its Career Technical College is a national higher vocational education demonstration college.

The university has 34,846 full-time students, including 2,771 doctoral and postgraduate students. Over the past 60 years, more than 120,000 students have graduated from the school and many of them have become leading figures in the fields of agriculture, animal husbandry, forest, water, grass and milk in the autonomous region.

The school campus is composed of three parts: Hohhot campus, Career Technical College campus and Hailiutu Science Park area. The total area of the school is 1,000 hectares, including 600 hectares of teaching and research area. The school buildings cover 1.1 million square meters. And there are six standard track fields (gyms), including two in Career Technical College. The school's total value of teaching and research instruments and equipment is 909 million yuan ($144.6 million).
