The First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University

The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, originally known as the Affiliated Hospital of the Guangdong Public Institution of Medicine, was founded in 1910 by American medical missionary Dr. Paul Jerome Todd with 40 western doctors. It is composed of a headquarters, east division and Hui Ya Hospital. The Hospital is an important southern China base for research, medical service, medical education, preventive care and rehabilitation. It is well known for its high quality and excellent service in China and Southeast Asia. For years, it has been recognized as the most reliable hospital in the Chinese mainland by Hong Kong residents.

The hospital is home to five National Key Disciplines - Nephrology, General Surgery, Neurology, Otorhinolaryngology and Endocrinology. It also has 28 "National Key Clinical Specialties", such as Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Nephrology, and Neurology. The Department of Rehabilitation has been designated a WHO Collaborating Center for Rehabilitation. Its Laboratory of Nephrology and the Laboratory on Assisted Circulation are Key Laboratories of the Ministry of Health.
