Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, also called the Second Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU), was originally founded in 1835 as an eye clinic by the American missionary Dr. Peter Parker. It was the first hospital in China that provided western medical service and was the primary place where Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, the great revolutionary forerunner, studied medicine. Over an exciting period of growth and expansion of about 179 years, the hospital has developed into a Class A teaching hospital in China, famous for its medical service, education, research and health care.

As a pioneer in western medical practice, Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital was the first to provide ophthalmological surgery, and performed the first ovariotomy, the first lithocystotomy, the first etherization, and the first pathological anatomical examinations in China. It was also the site of China's first X-ray and the origin of the country's first medical magazine.

After founding China's first western medical school with the name of Boji Medical School, Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital began nurturing medical overseas students and nurses. Known as the cradle of China's western medicine practice and as one of the birthplaces of China's medical talents, Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital has been a keen contributor to China's medical cause thanks to the devotion of many famous experts and educators.
