The Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Medical University was established in 1963. The hospital was officially opened for treatment on January 19, 1970, and changed its name to the Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Medical University on April 16, 2016. The hospital has now become the largest comprehensive hospital in western Guangdong province. It is renowned for its strong medical technology, outstanding brand characteristics, complete disciplines and comprehensive advantages. It is the only hospital in the region that integrates clinical medicine, clinical teaching and clinical research.

The hospital has 3,409 employees, 15 post-doctors, 15 doctoral supervisors, 140 master tutors, 26 special professors, six post-doctors and 113 doctors. It has 36 clinical specialties, 10 medical technology departments, 50 wards, 23 clinical teaching and research rooms, six research institutes and 13 research laboratories. The most advanced and complete medical inspection equipment helps the hospital carry out new procedures and projects every year.

The hospital has 2,266 beds and its medical service covers about 30 million people in an area that intersects Guangdong, Hainan and Guangxi provinces. The annual number of emergency visits was more than 1.4 million, the number of patients discharged from hospital was 84,700, and the annual operation volume was more than 35,000.

At present, the hospital has two provincial key disciplines, one provincial key laboratory for project establishment, eight key laboratories at city and department level, and 14 provincial key clinical specialties. It is also a national drug clinical trial institution with nine specialties in national drug clinical trial identification.  

The hospital's clinical medicine department was founded in 1958. It was the earliest and strongest pillar discipline and brand specialty of the school. The department undertakes clinical and apprenticeship courses and graduation practice teaching tasks for undergraduate students at Guangdong Medical University in clinical medicine, medical imaging and anesthesiology, as well as the training tasks for master's, doctoral and post-doctoral students.

Guangdong Medical University (Zhanjiang) Clinical Skills Training Center is located at the Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Medical University. It is one of the largest clinical skills training centers in the province. It was established in June 2004 and is a multifunction center for clinical teaching, training and assessment. The skill center currently undertakes clinical experimental teaching tasks in three majors and eight specialized disciplines in clinical medicine, anesthesiology and medical imaging.

In 2010, the hospital built the Clinical Medical Research Center, the first clinical research platform in the Beibu Gulf area. It is the largest public scientific research platform in western Guangdong with the most advanced equipment and instruments. It can carry out almost all life science experiments.
