Shi lai yun zhuan is a type of round cake made of sweet potato flour and filled with a mixture of shredded ingredients such as seaweed, radish, cabbage, pork and shrimp.
Making the snack is not an easy process. Fresh sweet potatoes will be boiled until they are tender. After being cooled down, they will be pounded in a stone mortar with sweet potato flour, to make a flexible and chewy skin. The mixed ingredients have to be fried together to make them more tasty.
The delicacy got its name from a story of filial piety. As legend goes, a fisherman was put into prison wrongly. His son often came to bring delicious food, which used to be eaten by the prison guards. So, the son decided to make round cakes with sweet potato flour, stuck with some leftover outside, to make the food look unpalatable. In this way, the son successfully passed the food to the father and supported him till the day (the 29th day of Lunar New Year) he was proved innocent. Thus the day was designated as “Xiaofu Festival” to memorize the virtue of filial piety.
