Robot helps to deliver healthcare at Shenzhen hospital

Peking University Shenzhen Hospital welcomed a new member of staff on March 14, attracting the attention of many patients and their families. "Xiaoyi", a robot, was introduced to the hospital to help provide services to patients.

It is not the first smart healthcare feature in the hospital, but the excitement among visitors and patients was palpable.

As part of delivering smart healthcare, the robot can provide consultation services, helping relieve some of the burden on nursing staff. It can even chat with patients, providing them with further information about the hospital.

Li Fenling, deputy director of nursing at the hospital, said that there are three robots in the hospital able to provide such services. They can deliver services that would have previously been delivered by humans – helping to solve staff shortages.  

At present, Xiaoyi has an average of 1,090 interactions per day. It now holds answers to 565 frequently asked questions, and the amount is growing all the time.

The services provided by Xiaoyi are just one more way that Peking University Shenzhen Hospital is going the extra mile to provide high-quality healthcare.

The closed-loop intelligent transfusion management system in the spinal surgery department can accurately monitor transfusion speed, estimate residual quantity, and alert the nurse to pick up a bottle or pull out a needle –increasing efficiency and freeing up staff for other tasks. It is also designed to be more comfortable for the patient.

"The infusion bottle is hung below the liquid residual sensor, which can monitor the residual amount of the infusion. When the liquid is less than 5 ml, the sensor will alert the nurse station to install the replacement," said Huang Heliang, a nurse in the department.

Also, the hospital uses intelligent medicine cabinets to make sure the process of using medicine is safer and more scientific. In the past, drug verification and delivery were a manual task. However, it was not foolproof and errors could be made.

Now, the smart medicine cabinets solve this problem. Every time a drug is taken, a corresponding data record is made. Using the data records, the hospital pharmacy is able to replenish the medicine cabinet as required.
