Zhejiang University MBBS program

Zhejiang University MBBS (Medical Bachelor & Bachelor of Surgery) program is a medical education program specifically designed for international students who wish to pursue a medical bachelor degree in China. The program was formally established and began to recruit students in September 2006.

To ensure the quality of education, in May 2006, Chinese Ministry of Education held a Conference on the China Higher Medical education (Western Medicine) for International Students in Tianjin, to discuss the quality control standards. A guideline, ‘The Provisional Regulations on Quality Control Standards of Undergraduate Medical Education for International Students (English Media)’ was finally formed and published soon after. After reviewing the qualification, first 30 medical schools including Zhejiang University School of Medicine were accredited to enroll international students in medical education program with English media.

The composition of MBBS program is fully under the guideline of ‘Provisional Regulations on Quality Control Standards of Undergraduate Medical Education for International Students (English Media)’ and ‘Global Minimum Essential Requirements in Medical Education’. The overall goal is to develop extensive medical knowledge and laid a solid foundation for their further studies in any medical branch for medical graduates. Special requirements of other countries where most students originally come from are also taken into account.

MBBS Curriculum

Zhejiang University MBBS is organized in a disciplinary setting based on a school’s existing undergraduate medical education program and composed of two stages, pre-clinic and clinic stage. It takes five and half years to complete, three years in pre-clinic and two and half in year clinic. Core courses for pre-clinic stage include medical biochemistry, human anatomy, embryology, physiology, pathogen biology, pathology, pharmacology, pathophysiology, diagnostics, etc. While in clinic stage, students will spend 1.5-year to study the clinic courses.

Including internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, neurology, psychiatry, infectious diseases, etc., and one year in clinical practice (senior clerkship). Students will join a clinical team and participate in all clinic work and activities under the supervision of doctors.

During the first 2 years a Chinese language cause is also included. Other aspects such as physician-patient relationship, ethics, law and informatics are emphasized throughout the whole curriculum. In addition, students are also encouraged to participate in scientific research and other Extra-curricular activities. MBBS degree will be awarded to the students who finish all courses, pass the exams and meet all other requirements.

Zhejiang University School of Medicine

The history of Zhejiang University Faculty of Medicine can be traced back to the Chekiang Provincial College of Medicine founded in 1912 and the National Chekiang University Medicine College founded in 1945. The two merged in 1952 and established the Zhejiang Medical College, which was then upgraded as Zhejiang Medical University in 1960. In 1998 it was merged with Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University and Zhejiang Agriculture University to re-establish the present Zhejiang University, and reorganize School of Medicine and College of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the following year. In 2009 Zhejiang University launched “Super Ministry Reform”, reorganized School of Medicine and College of Pharmaceutical Sciences again, two of which are rebuilt as Zhejiang University Faculty of Medicine. Thus, a century has witnessed Zhejiang University School of Medicine, although with several changes of name and place, evolving into one of the most prestigious medical schools in the nation.

The Faculty of Medicine is composed of 8 faculties: Basic Medicine, Public Health, First Clinical Medicine, Second Clinical Medicine, Third Clinical Medicine, Dental Medicine, Stomatology and Nursing. Apart from these academic faculties, there are 6 affiliated hospitals and the affiliated Yiwu Hospital under construction. These establish a solid foundation for us to fulfill our three-fold roles in medical education, biomedical sciences, and healthcare services. Its educational programs include an 8-year continuum, a 7-year continuum, and a 5-year bachelor program (MBBS) for international students. The graduate program has a wide coverage of disciplines in biomedical sciences and clinical sciences. Equally important is the role the school has been playing in research.

The Faculty is dedicated to training and bringing up medical talents of medical practice, biomedical research and public health management. Its educational programs include 8-year Medical Doctor program, 7-year master of medicine program, 4-year Bachelor of Pharmacy program, 5.5-year Clinical Medicine program for international students (MBBS) etc.. It has set up basic medicine, clinical medicine, oral medicine and pharmacy primary discipline for doctor degree and five mobile post-doctoral stations.

In the brand-new and picturesque Zijingang Campus of Zhejiang University, the Faculty is equipped with modern teaching and research facilities, and has built up a new academic management system centering on course team and research team(PI system), all of which have created a better environment for establishing a research Faculty of Medicine. Zhejiang University Faculty of Medicine will achieve a level of excellence unprecedented in its long history.
