Shenzhen's traffic police department teamed with technology companies on March 9 on a special project to build a smart transportation management system in the city.

The system, according to insiders, will feature a range of functions, such as automated warning signals when pedestrians are spotted on express ways as well as smart traffic light management. The project is expected to take about one and a half years to complete and will lift Shenzhen's traffic management to new levels.

The first phase of the project will involve the installation of more than 1,000 high definition video surveillance cameras, over 300 car plate scanners, and 100 LED traffic screens on 17 express ways in Bao'an, Longhua and Guangming districts, according to Li Qiang, head of the technology division of the city's traffic police bureau. The department will also upgrade old road-safety cameras, traffic flow detection devices and traffic signal controllers, added Li.

Optic Transport Networks, data clouds and high-performance computer hardware resource pools will also be set up to safeguard the integration and sharing of transportation data.

Once completed, the project will provide outstanding technological support in dealing with traffic-related crimes and providing better services for local citizens, Li said.
