Zhanjiang Urban Administration Bureau announced on Feb 11 that Nanguo Tropical Garden has become the first locale in the city to be presented with the Guangdong Exemplary Award for Livable Environment.

The award, founded by the Guangdong Housing and Urban-Rural Development Bureau in 2010, only recognizes projects that display an outstanding level of performance in terms of ecological protection, landscaping and environmental treatment.

Located in downtown Zhanjiang, the 640,000-square-meter tropical garden is the largest in the city. More than 600 varieties of trees and other flora have been planted to further enhance the already beautiful original landscape.

In addition to ecological restoration, Nanguo Tropical Garden is also a dedicated leisure space for locals with its array of footpaths, bicycle lanes, fitness equipment and playgrounds, according to a spokesman.
