Zhanjiang is the 65th among the Chinese cities for sustainable development, according to a list recently released by the China Center for International Economic Exchanges (CCIEE) and the Earth Institute of Columbia University in Beijing.

With reference to international standards, the research group spent three years creating a new evaluation system which abandons the old practice of prioritizing a city's GDP performance above all, according to an executive of the CCIEE.

Instead, the selection process involved a thorough analysis of data across 22 indicators in the five categories of economic development, people's livelihoods, environment and resources, emission of pollutants and environmental governance.

Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Beijing, Hangzhou, Shanghai, Qingdao, Wuxi, Wuhan, Tianjin and Nanjing made the top 10 on the list. Zhanjiang was placed sixth among all nominated Guangdong cities.
