Lingnan Normal University (LNU) launched a first-of-its-kind School of Aquatic International Business on Jan 11 in a bid to bridge the gap between market demand and talent cultivation in the aquatic industry.

Aquaculture has always been the pillar of Zhanjiang's economy, yielding an annual output of about 50 billion yuan ($7.7 billion). For 12 consecutive years, Zhanjiang has ranked top in the country in terms of aquatic exports.

Currently, there are more than 1 million local residents engaged in aquaculture. Large-scale aquatic enterprises in Zhanjiang recruit some 300 university students every year in response to a huge demand for high-end talents in the field.

According to Liu Minggui, president of LNU, the establishment of the School of Aquatic International Business was a milestone for the university in its efforts to foster talents with international perspectives and strong competitiveness.

In June 2017, LNU struck a deal with six organizations such as the China Aquatic Production Chamber of Commerce, the Western Guangdong Aquatic Association and the Zhanjiang Cold-chain Logistics Association, allowing it to draw on their insights into the aquatic industry.
