Baotou Metal Deep-processing Zone (内蒙古包头金属深加工园区) is a national metal and deep-processing industry demonstration area located in the western part of Kundulun district.

Established in 2007, the zone covers a planning area of 37 square kilometers. It has clusters of the following industries: metals, stainless steel, rare earth smelting and logistics, building materials, and electric power and logistics; it plans to enlarge its area to 110 square kilometers, with Baogang Group merged in.

The zone also plans to construct functional areas for deep-processing of metals, stainless steel and rare earths, as well as steel chemical logistics and recycling.

It now possesses 162 industrial enterprises, which together have an annual production capacity of 12 million tons of steel and 400,000 tons of stainless steel. Its 65 large enterprises with annual sales revenue of 20 billion yuan (including the Baogang group) are expected this year to have a gross industrial production of 59.2 billion yuan, an increase of 2.2 percent compared with the same period last year. The zone’s revenue flow reached 80.1 billion yuan, up by 12 percent.

On November 13, 2012, the zone was approved as an autonomous regional level industrial park. In the same year, it was designated a new industrial demonstration base for steel deep-processing by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and was nominated as a steel and rare earth high-tech industrialization base by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
