After the ceremony, the young sailors divided themselves into four groups and took part in a sailing competition.

The children have relatively good sailing experience and solid foundation and in the future they will be trained more in terms of basic sailing knowledge, sail setting, sailing competition techniques and teamwork, according to Gao Dongyang, coach of the young sailing crew.

The competition is considered as a warm-up event for the Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18 Guangzhou Stopover, due to be held in the city next January. The Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18 is one of the world's top three major sailing events. All participating teams set off from Alicante, Spain in October last year to travel 45,000 nautical miles in nine months with Guangzhou being one of 12 stopovers.
