Sunan Shuofang International Airport had been under construction since 1995 and was put into operation on February 18, 2004.
The airport has introduced 13 foreign airlines, including China Airlines, UNI Airways, HK Express, Korean Air and NewGen Airways, and opened 48 domestic passenger and cargo lines. Locals can fly to Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xiamen, Chongqing, Chengdu, Xi'an, Zhuhai, Changsha, Kunming, Lanzhou, Yinchuan, Shenyang, Dalian, Sanya, Qingdao, Nanning, Guiyang, Changchun, Tongren, Urumqi, Hohhot, Taiyuan, Harbin, Huizhou, Quanzhou, Fuzhou, Hong Kong, Macao, Taipei, Taichung, Kaohsiung, Osaka, Sihanoukville, Siem Reap, Singapore, Nha Trang, Bali, Bangkok and Phuket.
The airport has been rapidly developed under the guidance of Jiangsu provincial government and Wuxi, Suzhou municipal governments. The airport's passenger service and cargo service growth rates hold the leading position among all civil airports in China.
