Shenyang High-Tech Industrial Development Zone (HIDZ, 沈阳高新技术产业开发区), formerly Hunnan New District, was jointly established by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Commission for Restructuring the Economic System of the State Council in May 1988. It was one of the first five national high-tech industrial development zones.

The zone now covers 32 square kilometers to the south of Shenyang's downtown area.

The zone focuses on development of high-tech industries, such as electronic and information, new materials, bioengineering and energy saving sectors.

The zone hosts 12 universities, including Northeastern University, 28 research institutes above city level, eight national-level engineering centers and experiment laboratories, 200 large labs, and more than 23,000 technology professionals. Every year, the zone produces hundreds of high-tech innovations and sees more than 100 foreign-funded companies start operations in Shenyang.
