Xiamen, Fujian province, has become a member of the United Cities and Local Government (UCLG), with a resolution passed on Nov 9 by the umbrella body for local government around the world.

The coastal city was officially granted membership at the 2017 UCLG Asia-Pacific (ASPAC) Executive Bureau Meeting and the Symposium on Marine Economy and Urban Development held in Fuzhou, capital of Fujian province.

The event attracted 65 delegations from 21 countries around the world, who exchanged ideas on such issues as collaborative development and establishing closer ties with countries and regions along the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. Leveraging their respective strengths and converging interests, the delegates explored opportunities in the cooperative promotion of maritime economies.

Kong Suting, an official with the Xiamen Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, took part in the event and promoted the city.

Being granted UCLG membership will help Xiamen develop further exchanges with foreign countries and boost its profile on the international stage.
