Quzhou strives to develop green economy

With reliance on its abundant natural resources, Quzhou in Zhejiang province is steadily developing ecologically friendly projects to boost its economic growth.

Qujiang district in the city plans to invest 7 billion yuan ($1.06 billion) in a hydropower station expected to produce 2 billion kWh of electricity per year.

Yuan Weihua, director of Huang Tankou township in the district says the station will generate extra fiscal revenue of over 100 million yuan for the government and further accelerate the exploration of local tourist resources.

The mountains and water resources has become a treasure trove for the district to develop new economy. Focusing on the hydropower station, Qujiang plans to build a scenic area. Besides that, a wind power plant has been under construction. The industries of clean energy and tourism are the new engine of growth to advance the district's sustainable development, Yuan said.

Another region, Jiangshan, a county-level city in Quzhou, is turning its eyes to the photovoltaic (PV) industry as a source of energy.

Arrays of PV cell panels can be seen from an aerial view in Qingquan village of Jiangshan. Jiangshan has invested 300 million yuan in the PV project since the beginning of the year and plans to install panels on roofs of more than 5,800 houses in two years.

Jiangshan began to set up PV power stations on wastelands it reclaimed. So far, there are six power stations in the city, helping 73 villages shake off poverty due to the development of new energy.
