Nanyang in Central China's Henan province has rolled out a plan to grow into a world renowned rose city by 2020, the city's forestry bureau announced on Sept 10.

Known as China's Town of Roses, an official honor granted by the State Forestry Administration and China Flower Association in 2000, Nanyang seeks to further upgrade its rose and flower-plant industry.

A major planting base of China roses, Nanyang breeds more than 2,000 varieties of roses in a planting area of around 100,000 mu (6,667 hectares). High quality nurseries have been sold to clients in more than 20 countries and regions including Germany, France and Russia, accounting for 70 percent of China's export share in the industry. A cluster of 466 rose and flower enterprises in the city contribute to an annual output of 2 billion yuan ($305.8 million).

Nanyang's latest plan foresees its rose growing area expanding to 150,000 mu and the annual industrial output reaching 10 billion yuan by 2020. Among the projects on the to-do list are the national exhibition center of new species, China's rose research center, an international test center and a national logistics distribution center.

As the host city of the 2019 World Federation of Rose Societies (WFRS) Regional Convention, Nanyang will build three new rose parks and upgrade the Nanyang Rose Expo Park by the end of 2018, for use as the main venues for the convention.

Up to 600 species of roses will be planted in Nanyang's urban green space, according to the bureau.
