Nuclear emergency response center to be built in Guangzhou

A total of 25 million yuan ($3.8 million) has been invested in a provincial project to build China's first nuclear radiation emergency response center in Guangzhou, local media outlet Southcn.com reported on Aug 31.

The project was unveiled at a hygienic emergency skills competition held in Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention by Health and Family Planning Commission of Guangdong province and Guangdong Federation of Trade Unions.

The competition consisted of three parts, prevention and control of emergent acute infectious diseases, emergency medical rescue and acute chemical poisoning accident disposal. Nearly 8,000 emergency workers from cross Guangdong took part.

Located at the Guangdong Prevention and Treatment Center for Occupational Diseases, it will be completed by the end of 2018. A total of 120 emergency workers of two teams will work in the center.

A highlight of the center will be a special white truck which made its debut at the competition and gained much public attention. Weighing a whopping 30 tons, the truck is able to function in nuclear pollution areas and remove nuclear pollutants from human bodies.

As the first decontamination vehicle in China, the truck offers different decontamination passages for those lightly wounded and seriously wounded patients. Each passage is divided into small chambers of polluted area, decontamination area, detection area and clean area.

According to statistic from the Health and Family Planning Commission of Guangdong, the province has more than 1,000 health emergency teams. It is the only province in China that is home to a national acute infectious diseases prevention and control team, a national emergency medical rescue team and a national nuclear radiation emergency response center.
