Guangzhou to deepen reform through IP protection

Guangzhou Development District (GDD), one of China's reform pioneers, has vowed to deepen the intellectual property protection and application in the city's growth transformation.

A total of 18 intellectual property service institutions including Ourchem, Ciprun, and Chengdu Xingzhi Patent Agency signed contracts on Aug 31 to settle in GDD, providing services including intellectual property database management and development, patent operation and intellectual property mortgages.

Guangzhou Development District (GDD) will build an intellectual property protection plaza and an intellectual property trade plaza, according to an announcement at the Forum on Comprehensive Reform of Intellectual Property Application and Protection held on Aug 31 in Guangzhou.

The two projects, to be constructed in the Sino-Singapore Knowledge City in GDD, will play a leading role in promoting innovation through enhancing intellectual property protection and trade.

Earlier on July 13, 2016, the State Council gave the green light to Guangzhou to carry out comprehensive reform of intellectual property protection and trade in the Sino-Singapore Knowledge City. After a year, GDD has accomplished building China's first intellectual property maker space and realized 1,000 patent applications.   

During the first half of 2017, a total of 786 patents have been applied for by companies in GDD, up 43.2 percent compared with the same period last year.

In the future, GDD will promote the mechanism reform of integrating patent, trade mark and copyright and establish a one-stop intellectual property service center.

"Guangdong cannot go back to the old path of paying great money for innovation, we need to strengthen intellectual property protection to stimulate the vitality of social innovation," said Ma Xianmin, director general of Guangdong Intellectual Property Office at the Forum on Comprehensive Reform of Intellectual Property Application and Protection.
