Nanyang has been selected as a receiving station for the Fengyun-4 (FY-4) meteorological satellite, the only such site in Henan province currently.
Launched in 2016, FY-4 is a world-leading geostationary meteorological satellite capable of tracking lightning and observing the weather every three minutes, and outperforming other on-orbit satellites in the resolution of cloud atlas and support for meteorological research.
The real-time information received by the FY-4 receiving station will be processed to estimate precipitation, detect ground and sea-surface temperatures, monitor sand, dust, water, vegetation, hotspots and snow.
It can also be applied to the analysis of weather, the forecast of weather and short-term climate and the monitoring of environment, disasters and spatial environment, which is of great utility value in various areas such as agriculture, forestry, water conservancy, environment and traffic.
