Nanyang citizens covered by the region's social insurance system are now able to pay medical bills directly using their social security cards in more than 7,700 medical institutions across the country, it was announced by Nanyang Medical Insurance Center on Aug 17.

Social security cards are the only authentication credential that can be used for identification when hospitalized out-of-town, which should be presented in the process of inpatient registration and payment, said a staff member from the insurance center.

To meet the requirements of trans-provincial payment, insured citizens must go through formalities before using their national social security cards in a medical institution offering such services.

Four kinds of people are eligible for the application of trans-provincial payment, including retirees who live in other cities and get their hukou (residence permit) transferred to that city, citizens living or working in other cities on a long-term basis and those accredited to other cities by their employers.

At present, five hospitals in Nanyang have joined the national trans-provincial medical care platform, which are Nanyang Municipal Central Hospital, First Affiliated Hospital of Nanyang Medical College, Nanyang First People's Hospital, Nanyang Second People's Hospital and Nanyang Nanshi Hospital. Patients from other provinces can enjoy easier payment services at these hospitals using their non-local social security cards.
