Guangzhou Port, Foshan Public Utilities and Zhongshan City Construction signed a contract to start work on the fourth phase of Nansha Port, on Aug 9.

The contract is a significant move combining the three cities efforts towards the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and Nansha Port – their gateway to the world.

In its first three phases, 16 deep-water berths with a capacity of 10,000 tons have been built to facilitate growth in Nansha Port's container business.

A total of two 100,000-ton berths, two 50,000-ton berths and related berths for container barge carriers will be constructed in the fourth phase. The project will cost nearly 5.6 billion yuan ($830 million), and will create an extra annual cargo handling capacity of 4.8 million containers. Construction of the project will start in 2018 and complete fully in 2021.

"Nansha Port, as the sea gate for Guangzhou, Foshan and Zhongshan, is of great importance for all three cities," said Chen Hongxian, chairman of Guangzhou Port. He added that with the fourth phase project of Nansha Port completed and open to use by the end of 2020, it will be able to handle 20 million containers annually.
