The Bonded Areas of SHFTZ lie at the estuary of the Yangtze River. It covers four special customs areas totaling 28.78 square kilometers—the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone, Shanghai Waigaoqiao Free Trade Logistics Park, Yangshan Free Trade Port Area and Shanghai Pudong Airport Free Trade Zone.
The Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone, China's first bonded zone, is the largest customs area in China with a high economic output and various services. It is engaged in international trade, modern logistics and financial services.
Waigaoqiao Free Trade Logistics Park focuses on international purchases and distribution, and cross-border logistics.
The Yangshan Free Trade Port Area specializes in bonded exhibition and trade, bulk commodities trade, cold-chain logistics for fresh foods, imported agricultural products and international shipping services.
The Pudong Airport Free Trade Zone, a forerunner in developing Shanghai's airport service sector, is intended to be a hub for aviation enterprise headquarters, aviation support industries and international aviation services.
