Amateur performers from across China gathered to showcase their skills and learn from each other at the first Peking Opera concert in Guiyang, Guizhou province, on July 21.

Set to be held from July 21 to 24, the four-day concert will have 176 selected performers singing more than 100 famous Peking Opera pieces. The performances will all be free of charge for Guiyang residents.

Some 400 amateur performers attended the opera carnival. The concert also serves as a part of a public service activity initiated by Guizhou Peking Opera Theater in 2014.

Having been held 100 times, the activity has become a favorite routine for opera fans every Friday. The Ping Sheh Singapore Amateur Beijing Opera Society, the first and oldest amateur Peking Opera troupe in Singapore, once attended the activity to great acclaim.

The attending performers spoke highly of the opera gathering in Guiyang.

"Peking Opera is an art which contains traditional Chinese virtues and values," said Xu Baocheng, a performer from Wuhan, Hubei province.
