An exhibition featuring nearly 80 pieces of cloisonne got underway in Guangzhou Museum on July 17, offering locals a special opportunity to admire the time-honored elaborately decorated metal works.

Cloisonné is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects. The decoration is formed by first adding compartments to the metal object by soldering or affixing silver or gold wires or thin strips placed on their edges. These remain visible in the finished piece, separating the different compartments of the enamel or inlays, which are often of several colors.

The exhibition covers works from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) to modern day, showing the glamor of this special intangible cultural heritage and giving a detailed introduction of the history, genres and technique innovation of cloisonne.

Yang Zhifeng, inheritor of Guangzhou cloisonne and senior artist and craftsman was also invited to the exhibition to display the procedures and techniques of making cloisonne works.

The exhibition will last until Oct 22.
