The silkworm industry has brought in total revenue of more than 1billion yuan ($15.52 million) to Donglan county, Hechi, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region in the first half of this year.

In recent times, the local government has been striving to change its agricultural production and develop the silkworm industry to help farmers shake off poverty.

Up to 530,000 spreads of silkworm eggs were sent to farmers, among them 1,539 low-income families, bringing in yields of silkworm cocoons totaling 2,077 metric tons in the first six months, Hechi Daily reported.

The mulberry planting area of the county is estimated to exceed 2,520 hectares this year, benefiting farmers across 14 towns and villages.

Regarded as a key project to help farmers in Donglan's lowest income areas, the government has organized five training activities since last winter to help silk growers to master techniques of silkworm breeding.

The silkworm farming business is expected to bring about stable income for local farmers in the near future.
