Pingtan balloons hover above Gansu

Balloons bearing the tourism campaign slogan of Pingtan, Fujian province—"Pingtan Blue"—appeared in the skies above the city of Jiuquan in Northwest China's Gansu province on June 26.

Part of the island city’s plan to use hot air balloons to promote itself as a tourist destination across China, Jiuquan is the first stop of the promotional tour.

Balloons are also expected to fly over three other cities along the ancient Silk Road in northern China in the coming weeks.

This is not the first time Pingtan has used balloons to promote itself as an international tourist island. The city also launched its first balloon festival in May.
