Guangzhou primary students lace-up for Norway Cup

A student soccer team from Guangzhou has qualified to enter the prestigious Norway Cup, it was announced at a recent promotion event held at Xingang Primary School.

The team will make its debut at the world's largest soccer tournament for children and youth aged 10 to 19 years, when its kicks off on July 29.

More than 50 international teams will take part in the event which runs until August 5.

At the promotion event hosted by the Royal Norwegian Consulate General in Guangzhou, Consul-General Lars Borresen wished the students well in the competition.

Wen Lizhen, principal of Xingang Primary School, said it had a long tradition of playing soccer and incorporating the game into its curriculum.

The school has held soccer cultural festivals for seven straight years, Wen added.

The Norway Cup first began in 1972 with 420 teams and around 8,400 players, according to Thore Vestby, member of the Norwegian Congress.

Around 6,000 games have been played over the course of the tournament, with a record of 2,199 teams participating in 2016.
