E-commerce experiences rapid growth in Hunnan

The national e-commerce demonstration area in Hunnan district of Shenyang city has been experiencing rapid growth over the past four years, and a complete industrial chain for e-commerce is gradually taking shape in the area, Xinhua reported on April 6.

The Hunnan e-commerce demonstration area, which was in the first batch of China’s national e-commerce demonstration areas, is a base that is aiming to explore an e-commerce development model integrating the industrial characteristics of Liaoning province and boost the economic development of the region.

At present, the Hunan e-commerce demonstration area is home to around 500 businesses. Domestic leading e-commerce platforms such as Alibaba, Jingdong Mall, and Suning Commerce Group have settled in the e-commerce demonstration area; a group of cross-border e-commerce platforms has also been established in the area, highlighting the Sino-Russian e-commerce platform, MaimaiChin.com.

In addition, the Hunnan e-commerce demonstration area has trained and provided employment opportunities for over 10,000 Shenyang residents, as it drives the development of more than 20,000 local e-commerce startups and businesses.

Innovative e-commerce models, as well as financial and policy support from the government, is of huge importance to the development of the Hunnan e-commerce demonstration area.

Targeted at the industrial characteristics of Liaoning province, the Hunnan e-commerce demonstration area attaches great importance on promoting the products and services of the advantageous industries of Liaoning province, including manufacturing, logistics, and agriculture, which plays an important role in boosting the rate that traditional industries apply to sell their products through e-commerce channels.

Over the past four years, the Hunnan e-commerce demonstration area has received 68 million yuan ($9.85 million) from the central government and the Liaoning Provincial Government, which has helped fund the establishment of e-commerce public service platforms and supported startup firms.

Currently, five public service platforms covering business incubators, personnel training, cloud-computing, as well as investment and financing, have been established. The Hunnan district also provides 20 million yuan every year to encourage e-commerce technology and business model innovation.

Also, Hunnan district has established the first e-commerce incubator of Liaoning province in the Hunnan e-commerce demonstration area, in a bid to explore the “internet plus innovation and entrepreneurship” development model. Over 300 e-commerce startups have settled in the area so far.
